The British Beer & Pub Association and the All-Party Parliamentary Beer Group the Parliamentary Pub Chef and Young Pub Chef of the Year award in 2016, in partnership with Nestlé Professional. The aim of the competition is to showcase the crucial role food plays in pubs and show Members of Parliament what great food is on offer in their constituency locals.
The prestigious award seeks nominations from MP’s to recognise a pub chef, or chefs, in their constituency who are renowned for their great food.
The competition involves a written entry which will be assessed by a panel of expert judges. A shortlist of eight finalists will then be selected to take part in a cook-off grand final. The winners are announced at a prestigious event in the House of Commons. Winners in two categories (Pub Chef and Young Pub Chef) also receive a cash prize of £500.
Pubs serve almost a billion meals a year, more importantly this is a growing market. Pubs are increasingly aware of the role great food can play in attracting new customers . Pubs are also vital to the local economy, offering valuable and flexible employment, with around 900,000 UK jobs dependent on the pub sector.
There is a national shortage of pub chefs, therefore the BBPA, in conjunction with the British Institute of Innkeepers (BII) and the Perceptions Group, launched the Pub Chef Passion initiative, including a short film aimed at promoting the pub chef as a career option.
This award seeks to build on that work, and encourage young chefs towards a career in the pub trade.
