My Partnered Pub: Darren Paul, The Station

As part of our #PartneredPubs showcase looking at how publicans work with their pub companies to run successful businesses across the country, we spoke to Darren Paul in the West Midlands.

For five years, Darren Paul has run The Station in King’s Heath with his wife Adelle, hosting live music, serving homemade food, cask ales and cocktails, just a few miles from the centre of Birmingham.

Before partnering taking on the tenancy at The Station, Darren had never operated his own pub, but had experience of doing so for other people as well as working as a Head Chef.

He said: “Partnering with a pub company gave me the confidence to take on my own pub. I get a lot of advice from them and feel supported because there is always someone at the other end of the phone if I have a problem or a question.”

During the pandemic, alongside rent reductions, Darren’s pub company also helped to upgrade the outside space at the Station, developing a covered area and an outside bar.

Darren added: “Day to day I’m focused on running the pub, so I really value my Operations Manager helping me to spot opportunities to invest and develop the Station to make it even better for our loyal customers.”

In March 2022, Darren won Publican of the Year for the Central Region at Punch’s annual awards, recognising how they have brought their community together.

They started in lockdown with a food parcel service and quickly grew to become a local food bank that helped over 500 families. Darren and Adelle have also led community efforts to help those affected by the war in the Ukraine, collecting five van loads of donations ready to be transported.

He said: “Getting recognition at the awards really meant a lot. It made us feel our efforts had been appreciated and it is also great to feel part of something bigger when you meet with other publicans from across the country as well.

“I would definitely recommend running a pub with Punch, in fact I have a friend looking to partner with them at the moment. It is a partnership that helps deliver real results.”
