Industry Overview

Chapter one looks at the economic contribution and impact that the sector has across Wales. The chapter covers employment, wages, regional impacts, as well as a range of other issues, while also comparing 2019 data with post-covid statistics.

Policy, Regulation and Challenges

Chapter two looks at the wider policy and regulation challenges that face the beer and pub industry in Wales.

There are unique opportunities and challenges facing the industry with key issues such as business rates being a devolved matter.

The chapter covers business rates, non-domestic rating multipliers, DRS, the Internal Markets Act, and public health.

Case Studies

Within chapter three we learn about three case studies.

Firstly we learn about Felinfoel Brewery. Felinfoel was established in 1978 and is the oldest brewery in Wales, located near Llanelli.

The second case study looks at SA Brains. Founded in 1882, SA Brains is one of the most iconic Welsh breweries. Based in Cardiff it has played a vital role in the Welsh brewing industry and Welsh cultural life.

The final case study within our report focuses on AB InBev and their Magor Brewery. Situated in South Wales and commissioned in 1979, it is one of the largest and most innovative brewing facilities across the UK.

Chapter four focuses on the future outlook for the Welsh beer and pub sector.
