Embracing innovation and tech in British pubs and breweries

By Emma McClarkin, CEO of the British Beer and Pub Association

Earlier this week, the British Beer and Pub Association hosted its first ever conference, Pint Tech; aptly named to reflect the intersection of tradition and technology in our sector.

The event was not just a meeting of minds, covering the future pub experience, the road to Net Zero and customer engagement, but a celebration of the industry's potential to leverage advanced technologies, from AI chatbots to smart kegs, creating a more efficient future breweries, pubs, and customers.

The success of the Pint Tech Conference was in no small part to our fantastic sponsors who are at the cutting-edge of hospitality solutions, from new brew recipes to new user interfaces, they are revolutionising efficiency and customer satisfaction in pubs across the country.  Combining this with thought leaders  speaking on the acceleration and major disruptive impact of AI, a revolution in farming, food and drink production as climate change takes hold, this really felt like a moment in time for our sector

For hundreds of years, pubs have stood at the heart of British communities; literally taking pride of place on our high streets and brewers have supplied them great beer.

Technological advancements are reshaping society at an unprecedented pace, and our industry is no exception.

Advances in brewing technology have already begun to transform how we produce our favourite drinks, and it's facilitating the creation of new beers and flavours already.

Automation and precision brewing systems are already lending a hand to create consistent, high-quality beers with enhanced efficiency and ease of use. Sensors and data analytics mean brewers can closely monitor every stage of the brewing process to minimise waste and guarantee optimal conditions. This not only improves the quality of the beer but also supports sustainability, an increasingly important consideration for our industry, both in the breweries and at the bar. These innovations were explored during our panel discussions, highlighting the sector's commitment to a greener future.

Social media and digital marketing have become powerful tools for pubs to engage with customers and build loyal communities, and artificial intelligence is catalysing data gathering and interpretation, bring companies closer to their customers than ever before. Pubs can now reach wider audiences, share their unique stories, and promote events and special offers with just a few clicks. This drives foot traffic and fosters deeper connections between pubs and their patrons, demonstrating the profound impact of digital innovation on customer engagement.

The intersection of beer, pubs, and technological innovation presents a wealth of opportunities for our industry. By embracing these advancements, we can improve brewing processes, enhance customer experiences, and connect with our communities in new and meaningful ways.

It was also fantastic to hear from Shadow Science, Research, and Innovation Minister Chi Onwurah MP who offered insights into the potential future under a Labour government and reiterated support for all who work in our sector just hours before the General Election was called.

We will work tirelessly with whoever wakes up with the keys to Number 10 on the 5th of July to highlight the innovation successes of our industry, and the vital role it plays across all communities in Britain.  We will continue to bring our sector and all those driving the technology to secure its future success together

Cheers!
