Nearly £50 Million Euros Boost For Pubs with Landlords expected to pour 10 Million extra Pints as England seek to end 58 years of hurt

Pubs are set for a multi-million pound bonanza as England face Spain in the final of Euro 2024, seeking to end their 58 year wait for a major international mens’ trophy.

Landlords expect to pull an extra 10 million pints from the pre-match build up to the final whistle amounting to an additional £48m in revenue.

Thousands of those pints, including gallons of alcohol-free beers, will flow during the late night licensing hours with pubs in England allowed to remain open until 1am for fans to celebrate - or drown their sorrows.

The late-night hours were proposed in the last days of the Conservative government and will be enacted unopposed in Parliament tomorrow by Home Secretary Yvette Cooper. Both Parties agreed the 1am extension should only be granted should England reach the semis and now of course the final.

This projected windfall comes despite the fact English fans are losing out when compared to their Spanish opponents and those watching the game in Germany. English fans will pay  12 times more on duty than those watching their team in Madrid, Barcelona or Marbella. Furthermore, fans at home will be penalised with a duty rate than is 12 times higher what than the 40,000 fans expected to make the trip to Berlin for the match will pay in Germany. The BBPA is calling for a reduction of beer duty from the new Labour government to support the sector.

Hailing the boost for England’s pubs, Emma McClarkin, Chief Executive of the British Beer And Pub Association, said:

“On what promises to be a hugely exciting day for the country we expect an incredible 10 million extra pints to be poured in our pubs this Sunday to toast England’s Euros final. A huge £48 million in additional trade for pubs and breweries will be generated by fans across the nation.

“As with the semi-finals, pubs will be licensed to stay open until 1am on Sunday night, giving fans even more time to enjoy the game, support our pubs and hopefully celebrate football finally coming home.

"Fans have shown us resoundingly this tournament that there is no better place to watch our teams and soak up the atmosphere than the great British pub.

“This Sunday the BBPA urges everyone to get down their local, support our pubs and get behind the boys. Come on England!”
